For a variety of reasons, it made sense for Casey and Tim to move out of their dingy, cramped apartment, and move in, albeit on a temporary basis, with us, as it was almost bordering on ridiculous that only Sharlene and I were living in such a large house.  After renting storage, arranging a gratis rental truck through the storage company, and lots of planning, moving day arrived on Saturday, March 22, 2008.  Tim, Casey, Sharlene and I weren't going it along, as two of his brothers were commandeered to help, along with a niece, a nephew, and of course, Tim's always-helpful grandmother, Sandy.

Three days before, I had celebrated a birthday, and for a birthday present, Sharlene had given me something that I'd been wanting for many years:  A Texas-style smoker, and I planned to try it out this day, as my role was a bit limited in the move.  The guys were tapped to do most of the moving, especially moving heavy items down the stairs leading to the apartment and up the stairs in our house.  The girls, led by Sharlene and Tim's grandmother were to carry the lighter items, arrange the rooms, and clean up the apartment.  Besides trying out my new smoker, I was in charge of the food and drinks, and whatever else needed to be done.  The food part was easy, as Sharlene had purchased a deli cold-cut platter and a veggie platter, and besides keeping the soft drinks and beer cold, all I had to do was keep the coffee hot and fresh.

Curtain call started late in the morning, and the whole affair was wrapped up by late afternoon.  Due to the help of four strong guys, careful planning and a lot of teamwork, the move went off without a hitch.  By 6:00 PM, we were finished with the moving chores, and enjoying dinner and drinks.

Now that we have two married couples living under the same roof, here are a few interesting dynamics about our household:

*  Five vehicles
*  Five computers
*  Four cats
*  Four cell phones
*  Two side-by-side refrigerator/freezer combinations
*  Five televisions

The numbers four and five seem to be quite common at our house.

We're not exactly the Brady Bunch, nor are we the dysfunctional Ewing family from the TV soap Dallas, but the arrangement seems to work, as we're all family, adults, and we respect each other.  Recently, I was able to change my work hours from the graveyard shift to swing shift, and that really works well, as the rest of the household is on an evening schedule.

Photo: Moving activity continued into the evening hours, mostly transferring stuff from the garage to their upstairs room.  During the move, our place looked like a used car lot.

Oh yes, my smoked steak and pork turned out delicious, and provided many enjoyable meals.
