Adalberto's is a small chain of Mexican restaurants in the Sacramento area, and they have made quite a name for themselves, as they serve authentic, quality Mexican food at a very modest price.

OK, picture this:  It's 0400 in the morning, I'm at work, and I get hungry for some really good, authentic Mexican food.  (Yeah, I hate to admit it but I work the night shift.)  Since I'm at work, I don't have a lot of time to waste, as I have to sneak out and snag the food while the boss isn't looking.  What do I do?  Well, since Adalberto's is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, I pick up the phone, place my order and by the time I get there, my food is ready.  And the boss didn't even suspect that I'd slipped out for a few minutes!

Adalberto's is sort of a cross between a fast-food place and a sit-down restaurant.  The interior decor is plain, clean and functional, but with the quality of food they serve at the very inexpensive prices, who cares?  When you walk in the door, the first thing you'll notice is the salsa bar, which is stocked with freshly made salsa cruda and salsa verde, not to mention lots of hot, delicious chips. And your nose will notice the delicious smell that can only be found in a good Mexican restaurant.

Left:  As I wait in line to order, I ponder the menu posted above the order counter.  Right:  After ordering my fish tacos, I help myself to salsa and chips from the salsa bar.

The next thing that will grab your attention is the menu posted above the counter.  It's huge!  Adalberto's features just about every Mexican dish know in these lower 48 states, and maybe a few more.  You can order al a carte, or a complete meal.  On weekends, they even serve menudo, for you tripe-heads like me!  The only thing that they don't serve is alcoholic beverages, but they have plenty of genuine Mexican soft drinks to quench your thirst.

After you've made your selection, you can help yourself to the chips and salsa and sit down at one of the booths and pig out!  The salsa bar is an all-you-can eat affair, and they don't mind if you grab some extra chips and salsa to take home with you, if your order is para llavar.  Oh yeah, it would be handy if you'd leave your English at the door, but not mandatory.

Left:  One guy fills a cup from the soft drink machine, as another guy fills an order from Adalberto's busy drive-up window.  Right:  A peek into Adalberto's kitchen.

You don't have long to enjoy your chips and salsa, because in only a matter of minutes your order will be ready. The food is excellent, the preparation is great, the portions are large and the price is small.  To my way of thinking, that adds up to a winning combination.
