When you're exploring Ensenada's famous fish market, you'll undoubtly work up an apetite, as the sights and smells of the market are enough to drive you into sensory overload.  Getting hungry isn't a problem, as next to the market are a row of small restaurants that cater to locals and tourists alike.  Not surprising, these restaurants all sell seafood dishes.  And fish tacos are perhaps the most sought-after dish sold near the market.

Photo:  Tacos Mary is one of these small restaurants.  Like many small restaurants in Mexico, it's family-owned and operated, and they all work in the restaurant at varying times.  The mother cooks, and  the sons and daughters wait tables, help prepare food, clean and do whatever else that needs to be done to keep the business operating.  I didn't see that father; I guess he was taking the day off.  It's Monday, December 6, 2004.

Photo:  The oldest son, who was working as the head waiter at the time of my visit, is quite a character.  He appears to be into body building, as he was quite happy to impress me by flexing his muscles when he wasn't waiting tables. When he wasn't working, he stood around and talked to his brother.

Photo:  Mary does the cooking in the compact kitchen.  I watched her dip the pieces of fish in batter and then drop them into sizzling-hot oil, in a large wok-like pan.  The corn tortilla was heated on the propane-fired range, to top of which is essentially a large griddle.  This is fast food as the time--frame from order to place was only a couple of minutes.  Mary must love her own food, as I catch her enjoying lunch.

Photo:  You have all sorts of condiments to choose from.  I chose onion slices, fresh tomato salsa, cilantro, and creamy, thinned white dressing.  As is was a little late and I wasn't really very hungry, I ordered only 1 fish taco.  I paid the small sum of $8.00, which is only about $.72 in U.S. dollars, for a delicious, hot, fresh fish taco with all the delicious condiments that I could handle.

When you're visiting Ensenada's Mercado de Mariscos, I highly recommend Tacos Mary for delicious seafood tacos.
