Wednesday, March 18, 2009, I pulled into the town of Beatty, Nevada, after a hard day of four wheeling, and exploring parts of the Greenwater Valley and Death Valley National Park, and I was looking for a motel room, to rest my weary body, and recharge my batteries, not to mention a place to "chill out" for a bit. I wasn't looking for a five-star motel, just a place that was close and convenient to places to eat, and the sights that Beatty has to offer. Oh yes, I prefer to stay at a motel with reasonable prices, as I don't need a whole lot of amenities. WiFi and high speed Internet access is a huge plus, so I can publish articles like this one, in real-time, as I stay at the motel. Exchange Club Motel, at First and Main Streets in downtown Beatty seemed to meet all of my criteria, so I went in the office, registered, plunked down my plastic, and emerged with the key to room 105.
Photo: Oz may have never given anything to the Tin Man, but Mr. Tin Man makes a great frame for the motel; the photo was taken from the crazy bar across the street from the motel. Exchange Club Motel is a 1960's vintage, two story motel, located next the Exchange Club (duh!!) in downtown Beatty, Nevada, and it's within walking distance of most of the sights of Beatty. Actually, if you didn't want to walk anyplace, this motel would be an excellent choice, as it's just across the street from a very rustic neighborhood bar, and next to the Rebel Oil Pizza & Subs, where I had the opportunity to enjoy a delicious sub sandwich for dinner. If you're looking for amenities such as a pool, concierge, salon, or a gift shop, look elsewhere, but I'm sure they would be happy to give directions to Angel's Ladies Brothel, Beatty's sporting house just north of town. But if you're looking for a clean, spacious, comfortable room and a very reasonable price, you've come to the right place.
Photo: My truck is battered and dusty after a few days in the desert, as its parked in front of the motel. The antenna on the left side is a ham radio HF antenna for the 20 meter band, and the antenna on the right is a CB antenna, used during organized four wheel drive runs. You walk into the room, and it's big, probably at least twice the size of Tom Bodett's place, and in addition to the king size bed, the room features a couch and coffee table, color television that actually receives 20 plus channels, a desk, a separate sink/wash area from the bathroom, a microwave oven, and a small refrigerator/freezer. The bathroom is quite spacious and very clean, and they give you little bottles of shampoo and conditioner, along with one of those typical motel-size bars of soap. For a single person, using the truck driver's rate, I spent a very quite and peaceful night at the Exchange Club Motel for only $34.95, plus Nevada state motel tax.
Photo: When I stay in a motel room, I like to spread out and relax. I was relaxing bed, working on the notebook computer, surfing the Internet, and watching television at the same time. That's multitasking! Not shown in the photo is the couch and coffee table. No, I really didn't pay a visit to the Exchange Club or Angel's Ladies Brothel, as I was too tired, and all I wanted to do was relax, watch a bit of television, surf the Internet, and work on this web site. Yes, I wrote this review of the motel, along with the review of the restaurant where I enjoyed a delicious sub sandwich for dinner... I absolutely LOVE the high speed Internet connection that Exchange Club Motel has to offer, as it makes uploading files a breeze...
Photo: Exchange Club Motel, from across the street; photo taken just after sunset. Note the "No Vacancy" sign, as the motel filled up early. If you're looking for clean, comfortable, basic accommodations, at a very reasonable price, close to everything that Beatty has to offer, you can't go wrong staying at the Exchange Club Motel. Highly recommended! Exchange
