I absolutely love a restaurant that has a long name, in this case, Rebel Oil Pizza and Subs... Try saying that rapidly, three times, and you'll become as tongue-tied as a chuckwalla in the desert. Kidding aside, Rebel Oil offers one-stop shopping for gas, groceries, souvenirs, convenience items, pizza, and best of all, they make a delicious subway-style sandwich. (I can't say "subway" as I don't want to infringe upon the copyright of the big boys...) Plus, if you're staying at the Exchange Club Motel, or any other nearby lodging facilities in the beautiful Nevada town of Beatty, you're in luck, as all you have to is amble across the street, and you're in sub-heaven.
Photo: The Food Mart and gas station, from the bar across the street, where it appears to still be Christmas, despite the March 18th date on the calendar. Wednesday, March 18, 2009, I checked into the Exchange Club Motel, after a long day of exploring the Greenwater Valley, and other Mojave Desert destinations, and I was tired and thirsty. After checking into the motel, I noticed that I was out of booze -- that's a federal case -- so I decided to take a hike across the street to Rebel Oil, as I noticed that the store included a Food Mart, and in Nevada, the land of the wide-open spaces, 99.99% of food marts sell booze. Eureka! I was in luck, as I was able to get re-acquainted with my ol' pal Jack Daniels, but while I was cuddling Jack, I noticed a counter in the rear of the store, where a menu displayed various varieties of pizzas and sub sandwiches, and a little light went on in my brain... dinner tonight!
Photo: Sodas, snacks, camping supplies and more are available at the Food Mart. This photo is looking towards the front of the store from near the sub counter, as the young lady to the right of her photo makes her way to the register to pay for the 6-pack of beer that she's carrying. Later that evening, after exploring the sights of Beatty, and spending some quality time with my friend Jack, I hiked across First Street and made my way into the Rebel Oil Pizza & Sub's Food Mart. I walked past the displays of groceries, snacks, souvenirs, DVDs, and even bypassed the beer cooler, as I made my way to the rear of the store, where the sub counter is located. The menu is displayed above the counter, and it offers several varsities of pizza, and seemingly endless combinations of subs. There was one gal, Patty, who was engaged in making a sub for another customer, and I could smell a couple of pizzas in the oven... what to do? Sub or pizza? Now I'm not saying that a sub sandwich is the most healthiest dinner in the world, but I know it has less stuff that makes you fat than a pizza, so in my healthy state of mind, I settled on a sub. Now, what variety? The Food Mart offers many combinations with all of the fixin's, but roast beef sounded good to me...
Photo: The sub counter is decorated with a mural of 1950's and 1960's era movie stars and action figures. Isn't that James Dean to the center of the photo? The menu is displayed above the mural. When it was my turn to order, I chose a foot-long roast beef sandwich, on cheesy Italian bread, garnished with provolone cheese, sliced red onions, sliced tomatoes, jalapeņo peppers, and shredded lettuce. Mustard, mayonnaise, and a pinch of salt and pepper completed the sandwich. Patty seemed relatively nonplussed by my barrage of questions and photos; I guess they must get a lot of restaurant-freaks in the place that like to publish Internet reviews of Food Mart restaurants!
Photo: I snap Patty's photo as she makes my foot long sub sandwich. Note the array of ovens behind her, which are used to make fresh bread and pizza.
Photo: One half of my roast beef sandwich shows the fresh ingredients and the great presentation. The sandwich tasted as good as it looked! The sandwich was great, as the ingredients were fresh, very ample, and applied just the way I like 'em. Patty is an outstanding sandwich maker, and Rebel Oil Pizza and Subs should be proud of their subs, and proud of the great job that Patty did. Oh I might add that the price, complete with Nevada sales tax, came to only $5.59 out the door, and you can't beat that. Great subs, great store, and great people... Rebel
