Lately, if you've been prowling around Nevada casinos, you've probably noticed that "cheap eats" are getting increasingly harder to find, as the polls tell us that the average casino player prefers quality food, attentive service and doesn't mind paying a premium price to enjoy the perks to reach that end.  What happened to the $1.99 ham and eggs breakfast, and the $4.99 dinner?  Like $2.00 gas prices, I guess those bargains in Nevada casinos are forever gone, lost to history...  It seems to be that way in Las Vegas and Reno, but surprise...  the bargain breakfast is alive and well in Laughlin!

Left:  The huge, lighted sign, annonces "Giant ham steak and eggs.. $3.49"  any time of the day.  Right:  Just under the giant words that spell "Colorado Belle," is the Paddlewheel Restaurant, located in the Colorado Belle casino.

The elegant Colorado Belle casino, which resembles a period Mississippi river boat, has a huge lighted sign erected in their parking lot that advertises "Giant ham steak and eggs $3.49.  Paddlewheel restaurant 24 hours."  I have to admit that seeing that sign stopped me in my tracks, as a "giant" piece of ham and eggs could be had at far less than the price of a MacWhat breakfast?  Naturally, we had to check it out, as we're fans of "cheap eats."

To reach the Paddlewheel Restaurant, you enter the Colorado Belle casino/hotel at the main entrance, and take the friendly escalator to "D" deck, but it's really the second floor of the place.  Colorado Belle is built to resemble a Mississippi River steamboat of the late 1800's, so in keeping with the nautical theme, the "floors" are labeled as "decks."  For me, a Navy veteran, it was easy to translate, but why didn't they call the escalator a "moving ladder...?"  Oh yes, I have to remind myself that they evoke civilian maritime heritage, not naval heritage... Anyway, when you reach "D-deck," you turn to your right, and you'll see the Paddlewheel Restaurant.

If you arrive at peak hours, such as between 0700 and 0900, you'll have to brave a line of folks attempting to enter the restaurant, in order to take advantage of the inexpensive and delicious food.  On Monday, January 15, 2007, we were presented with quite a crowd, since it was a holiday, namely Martin Luther King's birthday, which, as we're phone company employees, don't really consider, as that's not a paid holiday for us.  To all of you state and federal workers, shame on you, as you get a holiday that we, as highly-trained workers do not get.  Politics aside, we were fast-forwarded to the head of the line, as we'd accumulated "Colorado bucks" from our efforts at playing the slot machines the night before at the casino.  Gee, we'd accumulated $8.00 in "Colorado Belle bucks," to be applied to a $10.93 meal tab?  Hey, it works for me!

We were seated at a comfortable table, near the center of the restaurant, and were immediately presented with coffee, ice water, and menus.  At 0830 on a Monday morning, especially a holiday morning, the printed menu wasn't really necessary, as Jerry, Edna, Madrilène and I had already decided on the $3.49 "giant ham steak and eggs" for our breakfast.  As our friendly waitress, Patti, came to take our orders, we were almost like parrots, as it was "Ham and eggs," with the only variations being the method the eggs were cooked, and the type of toast served with the meal.  Jerry noted that Patti's nametag read "Patti California," and he asked if California was her last name.  No, she stated, as the restaurant likes name tags to read where the employee is from, in order to add some sort of character.  When Jerry pressed her from what part of California she was from, she stated that she is a native of San Diego, so no doubt she's a fan of the San Diego Chargers football team.  Jerry and I both thought the name of "Patti California," sounded quite quaint.

Check this out, as you shell out your $3.49 you get the following items for breakfast:  Slab of ham, as big as a plate, and at least 1/2" thick, grilled on one side, and tender enough to cut with a fork.  Two eggs, cooked anyway you like them.  Hash brown potatoes.  Two slices of bread;  your choice of rye, wheat, white or sourdough.  Yes, all of the aforementioned items are included in the breakfast for only $3.49!  You just can't beat the deal!  Extra perks include delicious, I mean delicious, to-die-for coffee for $.99 for a bottomless cut, and Bloody Mary's or Orange juice/champagne cocktails for $.99 each, served to you by a cocktail waitress.  Wow!  What a bargain!

Paddlewheel Restaurant serves a breakfast that will bring tears to the eyes of longtime fans of Nevada casinos, as they recall the good ol' days of the early 1990's when food was a bargain, and a loss-leader among casinos.  My recommendation is when you're visiting Laughlin, you should visit Paddlewheel for a delicious, cheap breafast, and enjoy the nostaliga of the ealy 1990's, while enjoying your paycheck the early 2000's.

Photo:  You get all of this for only $3.49?  Yes, at the Padddlewheel Restaurant, you get a huge slab of ham, with hash brown potatoes and your choice of eggs on top, and toast of your choice.  Coffee is extra, but the meal is filling, delicious and it's a real bargain!  Eat.  Pig-out.  Enjoy!

Since we had accumulated comp time of $8.00 from the night before, we cased in our comp bucks and our tab came to only $2.93 for Sharlene and I, for a filling, delicious breakfast ath the Paddlewheel Restuarant. Naturally, we left a generous tip for our charming waitress Patti, which is always the right thing to do when you enjoy good food, and great service.

Paddlewheel Restaurant serves American style cuisine and very reasonable prices, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with breakfast served 24 hours a day.  The food is great, the prices will leave lots of greenbacks in your wallet to feed the slot machines, and the dining atmosphere is casual, yet elegant, and the service is great.  The steak ham and egg special will astound you and fill you up at any time of the day, and you'll leave Paddlewheel Restaurant with a smile on your face.  Highly recommended by the author!
