This restaurant review was written by my friend Jerry Flinn, who currently resides in Mercedes, Texas, and has eaten at many restaurants in Mercedes, Texas. There is a little restaurant located in Mercedes called Gamma's Cafe, that's patronized by local residents, and features the local cusine of the lower Rio Grande Valley. Just reading the name "Gamma's" brings back childhood memories, as the nostalgic name evokes many fine memories.
Left: Gramma's Cafe has been operating out of this small storefront for many years. Right: This is the Lopez family, with Frank Jr, Virginia, Leroy and Johnny Lee. They are regulars and rave about the "special" oatmeal served at Gramma's Cafe. Upon entering the restaurant, you come to feel right at home as you are greeted by Homero Rodriquez. Both he and his wife Amalia own the establishment which is located at 136 North Texas Street, in Mercedes. Their telephone number is 956 514-9925. Homero told me that he takes phone orders and delivers in the local area for free; also, you can call ahead and the meal will be there waiting for you when you arrive at the restaurant. We noticed that his service must be in high demand because the telephone rings almost constantly as you dine at the restaurant. The menu is extensive with many choices for breakfast and lunch.
Left: Here comes the food! Amalia is picking up the plate with Homero watching. Right: Eco making tortillas. Her tortillas are delicious, and taste homemade. Corn tortillas are very popular in the lower Rio Grande Valley. I chose the papas con chorizo and potatoes with Mexican sausage my breakfast. My order arrived with a salad, and a side of refried beans, and in-house-made salsa on the side. My wife Edna ordered scrambled eggs with ham and cheese with the beans and salad. All of Gamma's breakfast meals are priced at only $3.00 for the complete breakfast, and that makes a real deal! Oops, I almost forgot the homemade tortillas that Gamma's includes with every meal. You can just about anything you want from the menu, and you'll find it delicious.
Left: Delia Hernandez doing what she does best, cooking salsas, and she loves her job! Right: In-house made tortillas cooking on the griddle. Note that both corn and flour tortillas are cooking. Gamma's has an extra touch they add to breakfast in that they bring out hot oatmeal for everyone almost through the entire morning meal. This a really nice treat on a cool morning. I interviewed a family dining earlier in the restaurant, and they told me the oatmeal is the highlight of their day and come often because of the draw of the oatmeal. Lunch is priced at $4.00 for any item. Homero said the daily special could be milanesa one day, chicken fried steak the next day. So, something different each day can be anticipated. Oh boy! The Rodriquez's have been in the business for about 25 years and have owned, managed and operated Gamma's for about 7 years.
Left: My breakfast of chorizo con papas. Right: Edna's egg, ham and cheese scramble, and don't forget the almost endless coffee... So, come and visit, relax and enjoy the local hospitality. While you are there also take a look at the old Mercedes pictures on the left wall of the dining room. I loved them! Any comments or suggestions, please email me at ednanjerry@earthlink.net. Highly recommenced! Gramma's
