Editor Note: This article was written by Jerry Flinn, but the editor of this web site has made a few minor changes. Ever since the winter weather started in November, I've been driving by a place called Pleasant Park Restaurant. And, yes, I've also seen the Wednesday special on the sign outside. It is a hot beef sandwich for $5.25, sounds like my kind of place. Now all I had to do was get there on that day of the week. I finally did last week.
Left: Their sign is easy to spot. Right: The waitress staff, from left to right: Juanita Perez, Joni and Elva, our waitress. One customer said Juanita is "a good waitress and good looking." You will never guess what I had... Yep, the hot beef sandwich lunch special, and I have to say it is quite a deal, as it's served with mashed potatoes, corn, and really good brown gravy. I'm sure glad I finally stopped in! My wife ordered the same meal, and was able to eat her entire lunch. The place serves mostly American "comfort foods," but the menu also includes a fews Mexican entrees, as Mexican food is very popular in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. We have a couple of friends that go there for the hamburgers and frito pie. There were some people eating burgers and they told me they were pretty darn good.
Left: The great cook Patty Castelan at work crafting a hot beef sandwich. Right: Lana Wacenske is tending a bacon burger. They run a different special Monday through Saturday. Some examples of these are on Monday, they serve meatloaf and on Tuesday it's pork chops. Ummmmm comfort foods! And don't forget the desserts, including the most beatiful pies you've ever seen. I undersatnd Tami Rodriguez comes in at 4 in the morning to bake these. (Editor's note: I wonder if she makes pies while listening to the Faron Young country song, "It's Four in the Morning?) Sorry but I don't get up early enough to watch this but I really appreciate her work. Thanks Tami. I was too full but I promise I'll be back.
Left: Hot beef up close and personal. Right: Gene and Joanne Mordecai love this place. The service was really good. Our waitress, Elva knows her job, as she anticipated our every whim. While we were enjoying our meal, I watched the waitess work other tables, and the service was top of the line. Pleasant Park Restaurant has been in business for many years and I can tell the entire staff has the experience to run a real nice place. Our bill was around $13.00 with the two sandwiches and drinks, which is good value considering I wasn't hungry later for dinner. So, come on by and enjoy the country hospitality where all the food is homemade.
