There are many restaurants in the Mother Lode city of Sonora, CA that serve burgers, and most restaurants serve a great burger.  But what makes a superior burger?  Is it fresh ingredients?  Is it the quality of the meat, bun and garnishes?  Is it the service?  Or is it the atmosphere?  When you're looking to enjoy one of the best burgers in Sonora, and a burger that has all of the aforementioned qualities, you'll find what you're looking for at The Diamondback Grill, located on Washington Street, in downtown Sonora.

As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences.

Photo:  The Diamondback Grill is located on Washington Street, in downtown Sonora, CA.  Due to the small facade, you'd think the dining room would be small, but it's actually quite large and spacious.  The Diamondback Grill has been serving delicious burgers and more in downtown Sonora since 1991.

It's late Saturday afternoon, around 1730 on September 07, 2019, and I've arrived with "burger" on my brain, and later I'll find out that I've chosen the right restaurant.

Photo:  As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly staff member who will seat you at an open table, and give you a menu.  I noticed the bar to the right, and simply sat myself at the bar.  Note the cozy, rustic decor, in keeping with the downtown Sonora atmosphere.

Photo: View of the bar, which is located at the rear of the restaurant.  I sat at the bar, near the middle, just across the room from the open kitchen.  On this early Saturday evening, the restaurant was only about half seated.

Photo:  The Diamondback Grill's menu is quite extensive, and features mostly "pub" style food.  Tonight, I was in the mood for a burger - as always - so I went straight for the "Famous Diamondback Grill Burgers," and decided to go with the "Diamondback Burger," since it was at the top of the menu and this was my first visit.  The "house" burger, along with an order of fries is always a good place to start.

Photo:  Locate behind the bar, the restaurant features a well-stocked wine rack, stocked with many wines grown locally, in Tuloumne, Mariposa, Calaveras and Amador Counties.

Photo:  Meet Sherry, my friendly server, who delivers my "Diamondback Burger," along with an order of fries, with a smile.  Sherry is a long time employee, as she's been with the restaurant for 20 years, and is also a dedicated "foodie," just like I am, which certainly puts her in the right job.  Between customers and other duties, she and I chatted about area restaurants and food in general.  I enjoyed her fine service, her great conversation, and her amazing company.

Photo:  Since today was my first visit to this fine restaurant, and since I was in the mood - as always - for a burger, I decided to start at the top of the menu and order the "Diamondback Burger," along with a side of fries.  If you're not in the mood for fries, you can order soup or salad instead.

My  "Diamondback Burger" arrived open faced, and began with a half pound beef patty cooked any way you order it, in my case, I ordered medium rare.  The juicy meat patty is set on top of a sesame bun, and come dressed with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle slices.  A "mountain" of golden fries is the "stock" side dish, and that's exactly what I ordered, as fries are my favorite side to enjoy with my burger.

The juicy patty of meat was cooked perfectly medium rare, just the way I ordered it, and as I bit into the burger, juice oozed out... the menu states that you'll need multiple napkins while eating this burger, and that's true.  I couldn't help noticing the attractive grill marks on the meat, which enhanced the already stunning presentation.

The sesame bun was fresh, and quite large, but it didn't dwarf the meat patty, and provided the perfect meat-to-bun ratio for this amazing burger.  The lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle slices were super fresh and delicious. Diamondback Grill knows how to prepare a superior burger, as the meat was hot, the bun was warm, and the lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle slices were cold... which makes for a truly superior burger.

I assembled the burger and simply added mustard.  As you bite into this delicious burger, you're instantly transported to "burger nirvana" as it's juicy, tasty, and when you combine the hot meat, the warm bun, and the cold fixin's, it makes for a five-star burger anyway you look at it.  Burger lovers rejoice!

The "mountain" of golden fries were deep fried perfectly, as they were golden brown on the outside, and tender, chewy inside, just the way I love my fries.  The Diamondback Grill doesn't skimp on their burger, and along with the burger comes a generous side, or may I say "mountain?" ... of delicious fries.  Between the burger and the fries, you'll leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face.

Photo:  I cut my amazing burger in half, to make it easier to enjoy, and also to admire the many layers of flavor that make this one of the best burgers in Tuloumne County! I loved the fact that the meat arrived hot, and the garnishes arrived cold, which helped to make this a superior burger.

The "Diamondback Burger" is simply an amazing burger, along with the "mountain" of fries, and Sherry's company, and "foodie" talk rounded out my enjoyable visit.  When you're in the mood to enjoy a superior burger, and lots of delicious fries, head over to The Diamondback Grill,  located in downtown Sonora, CA.
