Today, I felt like taking a trip to Japan, but instead of traveling by airplane, I wanted to stay in Roseville, and enjoy the fine cuisine of "The Land of the Rising Sun."  I hiked the two short miles over to Tang's Sushi, located on Blue Oaks Blvd., and enjoyed a delicious trip to Japan, thanks to the amazing cuisine this fine restaurant offers.

As with all restaurant reviews I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences.

Photo:  It's just past the 11:30 in the morning weekday opening time, Friday, July 21, 2023, and I've arrived at Tang's Sushi, located in Roseville, to enjoy some of the finest Japanese cuisine in town.

Photo:  As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly host, who will greet and seat you.  Once you're seated, you'll be given a menu and a glass of ice water.

Photo:  The dining room is simply beautiful, as it's tastefully decorated and very comfortable.  The first thing you'll notice is the large sushi bar to the right, where the two talented sushi chefs work their magic.  I found the rock wall, that encloses two sides of the dining room to quite unique, as I've never seen such decor before.  The dining room is lit from may windows with natural light, but there are track lights on the ceiling to add extra lighting.  I was happy to see the dining room was well lit, which made for great photos without using flash.

Photo:  The dining room, along with the sushi bar, as seen across the rock wall.  The sushi bar also features a selection of beer on tap, sake, and bottles of wine.  The walls of the dining room are decorated with paintings reflecting life in Japan.

Prior to October, 2017, this restaurant was Sakura Japanese Bistro and Bar, which closed and Tang's Sushi took over.  The inside decoration is virtually unchanged, except for a few small changes, such as new bar stools, plants being removed, and less furniture to "open up" the dining room a bit.  Click on the link to see how the restaurant was during the Sakura days...

Photo:  The restaurant offers a comfortable patio if you prefer to dine outside.  On this 100+ degree day, the patio was closed, thanks to the hot day.

Photo:  The drinks menu offers wine, sake along with draft and bottled beer.

Photo:  One page of the large menu lists "Bento Box," which I rarely resist when I visit a quality Japanese restaurant. Along with"Bento Boxes," the menu lists all of your Japanese favorites.

Photo:  Behind the sushi bar, there were two talented and friendly sushi chefs making delicious sushi.  These guys certainly know what their doing!

Photo:  Meat and fish for sushi is on display at the bar, which makes for an attractive presentation.

Photo:  A small bowl of miso soup was part of the lunch, along with a welcome surprise of a small side of pickled cabbage and wasabi.  Oh yes!

The small - maybe 6 oz - bowl of miso soup, along with the pickled cabbage and wasabi was a welcome appetizer to my delicious lunch, as I waited for my "Bento Box" to arrive.  The soup was based on the Japanese classic dashi stock, and included lots of miso paste, along with seaweed, which made the flavor to be outstanding.  There were a few small cubes of tofu which added substance and an "earthy" texture to this delicious bowl of soup.

Are you familiar with wasabi?  It's spicy, pungent, and the flavor goes up your nose.  It's HOT... way to hot for me, but it's a Japanese staple and it has a different kind of heat than say a habanero chili pepper, as the heat goes up your nose and radiates through your brain rather than burning your mouth.  Whatever... I added the wasabi into my bowl of miso soup and enjoyed the taste sensation, complete with the up-my-nose-heat.  The icy cold glass of beer worked wonders...

I simply ate the pickled cabbage on the side, as it made for a tasty side, and made for great dipping into the bowl of miso soup.  Miso soup, pickled cabbage, wasabi, along with an icy cold draft Tsingtao beer made for a great appetizer!

Photo:  Meet Gary, my super friendly host, who brought me delicious lunch to me with a smile.  Gary provided outstanding service and treated me like family.

Photo:  I smile, as I'm ready to enjoy an amazing "Bento Box" lunch, at Tang's Sushi in Roseville.  I kidded Gary, as my draft beer was served in a Modelo glass, as Tang's isn't exactly a Mexican restaurant!  He took the kidding like a trooper...

Photo:  From the "Bento Box" page of the menu, I went with Chicken Teriyaki, along with California Roll and Vegetable Tempura as my sides of choice.  The menu describes this amazing lunch as "Bento Box, served with miso soup, salad and rice."  That's a simple description for such an elegant meal, and I confess that I'm a lover of Japanese cuisine!  Note the stunning presentation, complete with an edible - at least for me - flower.

Since this was lunch, the chicken was of a modest portion, but in keeping with Japanese cuisine, presentation and quality were the main emphasis.  The chicken was cut into small pieces, seasoned and marinated in delicious teriyaki sauce, and grilled to perfection.  Normally, teriyaki isn't my first choice, as I'm not a fan of salt, but this Chicken Teriyaki was simply standout amazing, as it had a robust, amazing flavor, on the "sweet side" of the fence, and was maybe some of the best teriyaki chicken I've enjoyed in a long time.  As a delicious bonus, the extra teriyaki sauce provided for flavorful dipping for the large ball of rice.

The ball of rice was about the size of a baseball, and simply white rice, steamed to perfection.  The rice was simple, plain rice, but it was perfect, as it wasn't soggy or crunchy, and simply perfect.  The little cup of dipping sauce - I have no idea what it was - along with the drippings from the Chicken Teriyaki, along with the soy sauce on the table made the plain white rice a wonderful side dish.

How could I resist an order  of Vegetable Tempura as one of my sides of choice?  True to form, Tang's Sushi served light, crispy, delicate tempura batter, perfectly deep fried!  Simply delicious!  Battered and deep fried veggies were an onion ring, a couple slices of squash, thick slices of carrot, along with a slab of cucumber.  Oh my... what a side dish!

I felt like walking on the "wild side" so I went with California Rolls as my second side dish to the delicious lunch. I enjoyed four small sushi rolls, created by the talented sushi chefs behind the counter.  The rolls were packed with avocado along with chicken, and tightly rolled in seaweed, in the spirit of a true delicious sushi roll.  Packed rice coated the outside, with made for a simply delicious sushi roll.  The rolls were fresh - as good sushi always is - flavorful and made for a second delicious side to my lunch.

Salad was lettuce, grape tomatoes with diced carrots, and dressed in a tangy dressing, unlike anything I've ever enjoyed before.  Oh my!  Naturally, the vegetables were crisp, fresh and enjoyable.  The dressing seemed to be mostly ranch, but was much sweeter and added a unique flavor to the salad. I am so ignorant when it comes to the cuisine of Japan... was this Japanese salad dressing?

As an aside, my travel to Japan consists of a brief 48-hour stay during my Navy days at United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka...  e.g. "Yokosuka Navy Base..." and I ate mostly Navy chow.  My knowledge of authentic Japanese cuisine is very limited.

Such an amazing lunch I enjoyed today at Tang's Sushi!  The presentation of the meal was simply stunning, and the food was even better, as it was fresh, expertly prepared and every bite with my fork - I never could learn to use chopsticks - was simply a flavorful taste sensation.  The salad and California rolls were chilled, and the Chicken Teriyaki, rice and Vegetable Tempura were warm, which made for delicious taste and a great contrast.  At $18.95, the lunch wasn't exactly cheap, but the friendly service, wonderful dining atmosphere and the fresh, delicious food made my lunch today not only a taste sensation, but a great value.  I highly recommend dining at Tang's Sushi for a delicious lunch!

I enjoyed superior Japanese cuisine, served by friendly staff, in a very attractive dining room.  For some of the best Japanese cuisine in Placer County, make a stop at Tang's Sushi, located in Roseville, CA.
